And there is a lot of good writing out there. But is it being read? Can it seize the reader by the collar, slap them awake and keep them reading?
Is good writing more interesting, for example, than a dancing peanut on Tik Tok? (I don’t know if there is a dancing peanut on Tik Tok, because I don’t watch Tik Tok, but more than half of people under the age of 30 do.)
The market demands a lot from the written word, and not always for the better. Form them into catchy headlines! Pen some lurid clickbait! Exaggerate, hyperbolize – lie if you have to!
But I still believe good writing has its place. It can be interesting and honest. I strive for both, whether I’m blogging for a company or covering a story for a news outlet. I’m thinking about the audience at all times. The readers do most of the work anyway.
Make no mistake: writing is powerful.
